Although we refer to all motorcycles as motorcycles, the truth is that there are many different types of motorcycles. In this article we are going to explain in detail the different types of motorcycles that exist and, in addition, we are going to help you choose the one that best suits you.
How many types of motorcycles are there?
The first thing to know is how many types of motorcycles there are. Let's see it in detail to better understand their characteristics.
Mopeds
Mopeds are motorcycles that do not have a cylinder capacity greater than 50 cc and, in addition, do not exceed 45 km/h. Mopeds are usually one of the most popular models of motorcycles among beginners, since it is a perfect motorcycle to get started in the world of two wheels.
One of the advantages of mopeds is that you can drive them directly with the B car license or, if you prefer, have the AM license. This brings them much closer to the general public.
Scooters
One segment above the mopeds are the scooters, as they are the real protagonists of the cities. Scooters are motorcycles without a fairing that are characterized by having a protective shield on the front.
There are a large number of scooter models that make them suitable for all kinds of users. In this case, there are low wheel, high wheel and also larger displacement models called maxiscooters or megascooters.
Tricycles and quadricycles
Tricycles and quadricycles have a similar appearance to the maxiscooter with the peculiarity that, as their name suggests, they have a greater number of wheels.
Naked
This type of motorcycles are known by this definition because they have practically no fairing, leaving part of the mechanics of the bike uncovered.
There are a large number of different naked bikes, both in terms of displacement and style, so you will find naked bikes for traveling like the roadster and others with a sportier design like the streetfighter.
Trail
Trail bikes are the most popular among adventurers. These motorcycles are perfect for use on and off-road. There are heavy and lighter models that can be ridden with an A2 license.
Sports
Sport bikes are the motorcycles of choice for speed lovers. Sport bikes are available in a large number of different displacements and usually have better performance than other types of motorcycles.
These motorcycles are specially designed for the racetrack, as this is where their speed can be best utilized.
Sport Turismo and Grand Turismo
These bikes are all about comfort. While the Sport Turismo is halfway between a sport bike and a touring bike, the Gran Turismo is a perfect bike for long distances.
This Grand Turismo model stands out with features such as an adjustable windshield and heated grips and seats, among other comforts. Miles will never be a problem aboard a Gran Turismo.
Competition
Finally, within the competition section we could include types of motorcycles such as speed, motocross, Dirt Track... that is, motorcycles that are designed and prepared to compete in different sporting events.
How to choose the bike that best suits me?
To choose the type of motorcycle that best suits you, the first thing to consider is what you want to do with the bike. It is not the same to look for a motorcycle to move around the city quickly, for example, to go to work, than to buy a motorcycle to go to the forest or travel by road.
Although many of the above models can be adapted to virtually any circumstance, it is obvious that they perform best when they are riding where they are designed for.
Does the type of terrain influence the choice of a motorcycle?
Of course. A motocross bike is much more suitable for riding on roads than a scooter model. The terrain is one of those factors that we must take into account when choosing one model or another and, in addition to the terrain, also the price-quality ratio.
Be clear about your needs and, from there, choose the most economical model for you if you are looking for good value for money. When choosing a motorcycle some aspects are non-negotiable depending on what you need. If you want a motorcycle to move around the city, for example, you can choose a scooter or maxiscooter, but also a naked.
To these preferences you will have to add the importance of displacement. Do you want a more or less powerful bike? If you are going to be constantly in the city, probably the displacement is not so important. However, if you want to go on the road, it may be an aspect to consider.
The best thing to do is to establish a pyramid of priorities when buying your bike. Have clear those aspects that should not be missing, for example, a good city bike, which is comfortable and consumes little. From there you can start looking at different brands of motorcycles until you find the one that best suits your budget, making you choose a good value for money model.
