Motorcycle fenders

The rear huggers in this section are rear fenders, or mudguards, that bolt to the swingarm, sit close to the tyre and move up and down with the wheel. They catch the water, mud and grit the tyre throws towards the shock absorber, the swingarm and the underside of the tail, areas the stock mudguard hanging from the tail barely covers. They are all made by Puig, each for a specific model and range of years.

Why fit one

• Protection: the rear shock and its linkage take the full force of whatever the wheel kicks up. With a hugger they stay cleaner between washes.
• Short tail tidy: if you have replaced the long stock bracket with one of our number plate holders, the rear wheel is left exposed and sprays the tail and your back; a hugger makes up for it.
• Looks: it covers part of the tyre and fills the gap between the wheel and the tail, which is very visible on nakeds and adventure bikes.

Matt black or carbon look

Puig makes them in matt black, with part numbers ending in J, and carbon look, ending in C. The first blends in with the wheel and swingarm; the second goes with other carbon parts or an exhaust in that finish.

Bikes covered

• Adventure: BMW R 1300 GS and F 900 GS, Honda Africa Twin, KTM Super Adventure, Triumph Tiger 800, Suzuki V-Strom 650, Harley-Davidson Pan America.
• Touring and maxi-scooters: Honda NT1100, X-ADV and Forza 750.
• Nakeds: Yamaha MT-09 and MT-03, Honda CB750 Hornet, Suzuki GSX-8S, BMW R1250R and F800R.
• Sports bikes: Honda Fireblade, Suzuki Hayabusa, Kawasaki Ninja 300.

There are no universal rear huggers: every swingarm has its own mounting points and shape. When fitting it, check that the rear brake hose and the ABS sensor cable are properly routed through their clips, and if you change tyre size, that there is still clearance from the wheel and the chain.

What about the front?

The front mudguard is rarely replaced outright. What riders add is an extender, a piece that bolts onto the stock one and lengthens its edge so the wheel does not throw water and stones at the radiator and engine; you will find them among the Puig front fender extenders. For the stock rear mudguard there are also Puig rear extensions that lengthen it downwards. And if you would rather see just the brand's range, it is on the Puig fenders page.
