Products are assigned the greater of the actual weight or the volumetric weight.
Volumetric weight is a way of calculating shipping cost by taking into account not just the weight of a package, but also the space it occupies.
It is used because in air and ground transportation, space is just as important as actual weight.
Some products are light but bulky (for example, a motorcycle windshield or a helmet).
Because they take up a lot of space in the truck or plane, their shipping cost is higher, even if they weigh little.
That's why shipping companies (like UPS) apply volumetric weight to make the cost fairer.
The carrier measures the length × width × height (in cm) of the package and applies a standard formula:
(length × width × height) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight (in kg)
Then, the actual weight of the package is compared with the volumetric weight, and the greater of the two is used to calculate the shipping cost.
Imagine a large box with a windshield that weighs 2 kg, but measures 60 × 40 × 30 cm.
(60×40×30) ÷ 5000 = 14.4 kg
Although the product weighs only 2 kg, the shipping is calculated as if it weighed 14.4 kg, since it takes up a lot of space.
