What motorcycle helmet should I buy?

It is normal that, if you do not have advanced knowledge on the subject, you have doubts about which helmet you should buy. Within the market for motorcycle helmets there are several aspects that you must take into account before choosing one, let's see what they are:

Types of helmets

The first aspect to consider is what type of helmet you need. Mainly there are three types:

• Full face helmets:: The full face helmets stands out for having protected the chin area. The housing is made in a single piece that can not be opened (we are talking about the external housing, not the visor). They offer greater safety than open helmets at a lower price than modular helmets.
• Open face helmets: Open face helmet or Jet helmets stands out for not having the chin covered, leaving the lower part of the visor always exposed. These helmets are usually cheaper than other types. The security they provide is good where the helmet covers, the problem is that the front is exposed and therefore the protection is not completely complete. They are widely used by city due to its great comfort and ease of transportation.
• Modular helmet: They are similar to the integrals with the difference that they have the outer shell made of two pieces, allowing them to open in the chin area. This means that they can be left as a Jet when they are opened or as an integral when left closed. They usually have a higher price but allow a wider use.

Homologation

It is important that the helmet you purchase is approved. This will give you the assurance that a series of exhaustive controls has passed and, therefore, will give you enough protection to keep you safe from possible head impacts. Materials

Currently the three most common materials with which a helmet is manufactured are:

• Polycarbonate: It is a type of resistant and cheap plastic that is usually used in most mid and low range helmets. This material is usually underestimated because it is the most economical, however they manage to pass all the quality controls without problems.
• Fiberglass: Fiberglass is composed of thousands of fine threads based on silica. This material is characterized by being a good thermal and acoustic insulator, keeping the heat inside the helmet in winter or the cool in summer and reducing the noise from the outside.
• Carbon fiber: Carbon fiber is composed of braided strands formed by thousands of thin strands of carbon. This material has the peculiarity of being as resistant to impacts as steel but with a lightness similar to that of plastic. These characteristics make carbon helmets the safest and lightest, although they are also usually the most expensive.

Air intakes

The air intakes are usually located in front of the helmet and can be opened and closed with a simple gesture. These entrances allow the air to penetrate inside the helmet even when the visor is lowered. This is very useful in hot summer seasons where we need to lower the temperature of the helmet. The more air intakes the better the ventilation will be.
