Puig tank handles

Puig tank handles give your pillion a grip in front of the rider on sports bikes and nakeds with no rear grab rails. What raises most questions is not what they do but which one fits each bike, because the part number follows the fuel cap rather than the model. If you are considering one for the first time, our motorcycle tank handles section explains how the passenger holds on and what changes under braking.

The filler neck decides

Each manufacturer fits the same cap to many of its bikes, and Puig makes the most of it: a single handle fits a Ninja 650, a Z900 and a ZX-10R, or a good share of Yamaha's MT and R families. This is how the range breaks down:

• Kawasaki: one handle for the current Ninja and Z bikes, from the Ninja 500 to the ZX-10R, and others for the Ninja 300 and the Z1000.
• Yamaha: YZF-R1, R3, R6, R7 and R9, MT-03, MT-07, MT-09 and MT-10, XSR900 and Niken, spread across several part numbers.
• Honda: CBR500R, CBR600RR, CBR650R, Fireblade, CB500F, CB750 Hornet and VFR800F.
• Suzuki: Bandit, GSR, SV, Gladius, Inazuma and GSX, plus the current Hayabusa.
• European bikes: S 1000 R and S 1000 RR; Monster, Panigale and Streetfighter; RSV4; several MV Agustas; and the 1390 Super Duke R, which shares its handle with the Speed Triple 1200 RS.

Part numbers that change with the generation

When the cap or tank changes with the bike, Puig makes a new handle. That is why the 2024-on MT-09, the 2021 Hayabusa, the 2014-2020 Z1000 and the CBR600RR have their own part numbers, the last one fitting both 2012-2016 bikes and 2023-on models. So even when the name says "varios modelos de Kawasaki" or "de Yamaha" (several models), confirm your year in the list on the product page before ordering. For bikes without their own model there is the universal handle, which only makes sense if its mounting matches your cap.

Material and finish

They are all aluminium with an epoxy paint finish in black, with the part number ending in N: light, non-glossy and ready for rain and sun. When fitting, tighten the cap bolts to the torque in your manual and check that the cap opens, closes and seals just as before.

And if the back seat is nearly always empty, a Puig seat cowl may suit you better, covering it and turning the bike into a single-seater. Other Puig parts for sports bikes, from levers to frame sliders, are under Puig.
