Puig Plate Bracket

A Puig tail tidy, or number plate holder, replaces the long stock bracket with a short one that lifts the plate and tucks it under the tail, leaving the rear wheel on show. It is one of the brand's best-selling accessories and one of those that most change the profile of a naked or sports bike seen from the side. Here is how it is made, how to deal with the light and indicators, and which bikes it fits.

What changes compared with the stock bracket

The factory part is usually a large plastic piece that doubles as a mudguard. Puig's combines polyamide parts with black epoxy-coated steel: it is more compact, lighter and carries the plate in a more race-like position. The trade-off is that the wheel is more exposed, so on a bike you ride every day in the rain it is worth thinking about a Puig rear hugger that sits close to the tyre.

Light, indicators and reflector

These are the three things you need to sort out before heading back onto the road, and Puig has a part for each of them.

The number plate light

Puig's lights use a universal connector that differs from each manufacturer's own plug. To connect them without cutting or soldering your bike's wiring there are number plate light adapter cables, which also extend the lead to the plate's new position. If the tail tidy for your model comes without a light, you will find one among the Puig number plate lights.

The indicators

The bracket has its own mounting points, designed for compact indicators; stock ones are usually bulkier or fixed differently, so they do not fit as they are. You have two options: switch to Puig indicators, which are smaller and nearly all LED, or keep the originals with the original indicator brackets, which Puig makes for each manufacturer. If you go for the first option on a bike with bulb indicators, check whether you will need a resistor to keep the flash rate correct.

The reflector

It is compulsory, and many tail tidies have one built in. When yours does not, or if it has broken, this same list includes approved reflectors in two sizes, brackets to relocate them and spare nylon arms for the indicators.

How to read the name

Every product follows the same pattern: part number, bike and years, as in 9353N for the 2017-2026 Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Z650. An N at the end means black, the only finish this family comes in. When two bikes share a tail section, such as the Ninja 650 and Z650 or the CB650R and CBR650R, they share a tail tidy too. Those labelled for various Triumph, Ducati or Harley-Davidson models cover a longer list shown on the product page, and for bikes without their own version there is the universal 1539N.

Before you order

Check the year: the tail section changes between generations, and the MT-09 has different part numbers for 2021-2023 and 2024-2026. Each tail tidy comes with instructions and fits with basic tools, although routing the cables inside the tail takes a little patience. As for roadworthiness tests such as the Spanish ITV or the UK MOT, what gets checked is the plate, the light, the reflector and the indicators rather than the bracket itself; we go into detail in the motorcycle number plate holders section. And if you want to keep working on the rear end, you can browse every other family from the brand under Puig.
