Motorcycle fuel caps and cap protectors

The fuel cap sits right in front of you on every ride, and it is the part that takes the knocks from the pump nozzle, your key ring and the tank bag. There are two ways to improve it and both are in this section: cover the original lid with an adhesive cap protector or swap it for a new aluminium cap.

Protector or cap: what is the difference

• Protector: an adhesive pad cut to the shape of the lid that sticks on top. The standard cap stays where it is, with its hinge, seal and lock, and it goes on in a moment with no tools. It protects and changes the look without touching the part itself. The ones here are made by Puig.
• Complete cap: it replaces the original assembly and changes the whole part, both in feel and in looks. You remove the standard one, fit the new one and check that it closes and seals properly. Before ordering, check on the product page how it opens and whether it keeps a key lock. The ones here are made by Rizoma.

Puig protectors: three lines and a colour code

Puig makes them in three lines: Radikal, the only one in several colours; Naked, in grey and more understated; and X-treme, in carbon look. The last letter of the part number gives the shade: U is grey, R red, A blue, V green and C carbon look. So 6324U and 6324R are the same protector for several Yamaha models, one in grey and one in red. All three lines, with photos, are under Puig fuel cap covers.

Rizoma caps: aluminium on show

Rizoma's are machined aluminium filler caps. Most belong to the Street range, in black, for Aprilia, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, MV Agusta, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha models and for the Harley-Davidson Pan America. The MT-09 SP, MT-09 Y-AMT and TMAX 560 get one in black or silver, as do several Vespas. You can see them side by side in the Rizoma caps section, and the Italian brand's full range under Rizoma.

Finding the one for your bike

Many names say "varios modelos de" (several models from) followed by a brand, because manufacturers reuse the same filler cap for years and on bikes of very different sizes. For example, the MT-03, the 2020-on MT-125 and the YZF-R3 share a protector, and so do the R 1200 GS, R 1200 R and RS and S 1000 XR of those years. Open the lid, count the bolts around it, note where the lock barrel sits and compare it with the photo and the list of bikes on the product page. The rest of the tank

The cap is only one part: the paint around it suffers from zips, buckles and knees. To cover it there are tank pads, which you can pick in the same finish as the cap protector. Oil filler caps and brake fluid caps are a different part and are not in this section. To keep kitting out the bike, head to motorcycle accessories.
