Accessories for the BMW R 100 GS Paris-Dakar

The BMW R 100 GS Paris-Dakar is a classic adventure bike suited to road trips and rides that take in unpaved tracks. Spending a long day in the saddle, then leaving smooth tarmac behind, puts the emphasis on how the bike feels rather than how it looks. Brakes, suspension and handlebars are therefore useful places to focus when choosing accessories for this model. This page covers bikes from 1989 to 1996.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R 100 GS Paris-Dakar

Think about the sort of riding you do most often. A winding road calls for a different approach from a rutted track, while a full day of travel makes comfort at the controls particularly noticeable. These are the areas represented among the accessories for this GS:

• Brakes: predictable braking matters when a journey moves between open roads, descents and slower sections on loose ground. For a Paris-Dakar used on varied routes, this is an area worth considering if you want a reassuring feel as you approach bends or adjust your pace on a track. Braking is one of the brands available for this bike.
• Suspension: uneven surfaces can make themselves felt over a long ride. Suspension suited to the way you use your R 100 GS Paris-Dakar can help make repeated bumps less tiring, whether your route is mostly tarmac or regularly includes tracks. Öhlins is among the accessory brands represented here.
• Handlebars: your position at the controls becomes more important when you spend hours seated and occasionally stand on the pegs on a track. Handlebar accessories are worth considering with both situations in mind, particularly if you want the controls to feel comfortable throughout a longer ride.

Decide whether road miles or tracks make up most of your riding before prioritising a change. That keeps the focus on the parts that will matter most on your own journeys.
