Accessories for the BMW R 80 GS

The BMW R 80 GS is a trail bike suited to rides that move between tarmac and tracks. That mix puts different demands on the bike: suspension matters when the surface becomes uneven, while your riding position makes a difference over a long day. It is also worth thinking about how you keep the bike covered between outings. Here you will find accessories for the 1980–1987 R 80 GS that address those everyday uses.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R 80 GS

A day on back roads calls for a different focus from a route that includes unpaved stretches. The accessory types available here serve distinct purposes, both while you are riding and when the bike is parked:

• Suspension: worth particular attention if your rides regularly take in rough tarmac or tracks. Suspension suited to the way you use your R 80 GS can help you stay composed over an uneven surface and make longer distances more comfortable. If you carry luggage on trips, that extra load is another factor to bear in mind when deciding how you want the bike to respond.
• Covers and blankets: a cover is useful when the R 80 GS is parked outside or left standing between rides. It offers a way to keep the bike sheltered when you are not using it, especially if your outings are separated by quieter periods. This is less about performance on a track and more about looking after a bike that sees varied use.
• Handlebars: where your hands sit affects comfort during hours on the road and how readily you can move around on the bike when the route turns into a track. For riders who regularly do both, the handlebars are a sensible place to focus when considering the riding position on an R 80 GS.

Let your usual routes guide the decision: you may want to concentrate on how the bike feels on uneven ground, your posture over distance, or keeping it covered between rides.
