Accessories for the BMW R 1100 GS

The BMW R 1100 GS is an adventure bike suited to touring, exploring back roads and venturing onto unpaved tracks. Those settings call for different priorities: wind protection matters on a long motorway run, while luggage space becomes more useful when you are away for several days. If unpaved routes feature regularly in your riding, protective accessories deserve attention too.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R 1100 GS

Puig, SW-Motech and Givi are among the accessory brands represented for this BMW. The most useful starting point is how you spend your time on the bike, rather than fitting everything at once:

• Screens: reducing wind pressure on your upper body can make long motorway stretches less tiring. Screen height and shape affect where the airflow reaches your helmet, so a touring setup needs to take your seated height into account, not just the screen's dimensions.
• Protection: a low-speed tumble on a loose track can leave exposed parts vulnerable to damage. Protective accessories help shield the areas they cover, making them particularly relevant when your journeys mix tarmac with unpaved roads, although they cannot prevent every kind of damage.
• Panniers: carrying clothing and overnight essentials on the bike keeps that load off your back during longer journeys. When travelling with a pillion, usable luggage space and balanced packing become more important than they are on a lightly loaded solo weekend ride.
• Footrests: secure boot support matters when cornering on back roads and when standing up over uneven tracks. The contact surface affects how your feet sit on the rests as you move between seated road riding and a standing position off the tarmac.
• Levers: town traffic and village stops mean repeated clutch and brake use, even on a predominantly touring trip. Lever shape affects how your fingers rest on the controls, making it a useful consideration for journeys with frequent stops and slow-speed manoeuvring.
