Accessories for the BMW R1100 R

The BMW R1100 R is a road-going naked bike suited to everyday journeys as well as weekend rides. How you use it makes a difference to what is worth fitting. In town, rearward vision and easy manoeuvring matter; on a longer run, your riding position, exposed parts and the need to carry luggage may come to the fore. A bike used mainly for commuting does not necessarily need the same accessories as one regularly taken away for a few days.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R1100 R

• Mirrors: when a ride takes you from busy streets onto open roads, a clear view of traffic behind you is useful throughout. Mirror position also matters when you are threading the R1100 R through slower-moving traffic or parking in a tight space.
• Protection: on a naked bike, exposed areas are part of the way the machine looks and feels. Protectors are worth considering if your R1100 R spends a lot of time parked during the week or makes regular stops on longer rides.
• Stands and side stands: think about how and where you leave the bike between journeys. Suitable support can be useful for routine cleaning and simple maintenance, particularly if this is a machine you ride throughout the week rather than only at weekends.
• Handlebar accessories: the position of your hands affects how you feel after time on the road, while the controls need to feel manageable at low speeds in town. This is an area to consider if your riding includes both situations.
• Panniers: for a trip away, carrying belongings on the bike means you need not wear a backpack for the whole ride. Luggage can also earn its place on shorter journeys when you regularly need to take things with you.

For the 1994–2000 R1100 R, start with the journeys you actually make. Daily riding and weekends on the road can put the emphasis on quite different parts of the bike.
