Accessories for the BMW R1150 R

The BMW R1150 R is a naked road bike at home on everyday journeys as well as longer rides. A weekday commute, a winding-road ride and a weekend away ask different things of the same motorcycle. The accessories worth fitting therefore depend less on a single idea of how it should look and more on where you spend your time riding.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R1150 R

• Mirrors: these are worth considering if you want a rearward view that suits your riding position. On an R1150 R used in town, being able to check surrounding traffic comfortably matters throughout the journey, not just on the open road.
• Protectors: useful when a bike sees regular parking as well as days out, they help shield exposed areas from minor knocks or a stationary drop. They make practical sense if your R1150 R spends time in busy parking spaces between rides.
• Screens: with an exposed riding position, wind pressure becomes more noticeable on sustained road journeys. A screen is particularly relevant if you cover motorway miles on the way to a ride, while short urban trips may call for a different priority.
• Panniers: carrying luggage on the bike rather than on your back makes a weekend trip easier to organise. They are also useful when you ride with a passenger and need room for both people's essentials.
• Stands and stand accessories: consider these if you park the R1150 R frequently or look after it at home. They can be particularly relevant when the bike is put away between longer rides rather than used every day.
• Handlebar accessories: the position of the controls deserves attention on a bike used for both commuting and hours in the saddle. Small changes around the bars may be more relevant to your daily ride than extra luggage capacity.

For touring, a screen and panniers address different needs from mirrors and protection on a town-focused bike. Start with the journeys you actually make, then decide which part of the ride you want to improve.
