Accessories for the BMW R12S

The BMW R12S brings classic sports styling to road riding. It is the sort of bike you might take out for an afternoon on winding roads or a weekend away, and those two plans place different demands on what you fit. Protection matters when you are moving or parking the bike; luggage becomes useful when the ride involves an overnight stop. Thinking about where your R12S goes most often makes it easier to focus on accessories you will actually use.

What riders usually fit to the BMW R12S

For this bike, protection and carrying space serve separate purposes. Even a short ride involves stops, parking and low-speed manoeuvres, while a longer trip brings the question of where to put a change of clothes and other essentials. The choice is less about adding equipment for its own sake and more about making the R12S work for your usual roads and the length of your journeys.

• Crash protectors and guards: help limit contact between certain parts of the bike and the ground in a minor drop. They are worth considering if your R12S spends time on twisty routes with frequent stops, or if you regularly manoeuvre it by hand in tight parking spaces. They cannot prevent every mark or repair, but they address a practical risk that has little to do with how fast you ride.
• Luggage cases: give you somewhere to carry clothes and personal essentials when an afternoon ride becomes a weekend trip. On the R12S, they make it easier to head for a stretch of good road without putting everything in a backpack. That can make a difference over a full day in the saddle, particularly when you want to keep a few items accessible and leave the rest packed until you reach your destination.

If most rides end back at home, protection may be your priority. For regular trips away, carrying space can make the R12S easier to live with on the road.
