Accessories for the BMW S 1000 R

The BMW S 1000 R brings a sporty naked-bike approach to winding roads, without being limited to weekend rides. It can also handle the daily commute, so worthwhile additions depend on how you split your riding time. Wind exposure matters on motorway stretches, while protection and the contact points for your hands and feet deserve attention when town riding gives way to a more demanding country-road route.

What riders usually fit to the BMW S 1000 R

• Windscreens: help divert airflow away from your upper body on this naked bike. They make particular sense when reaching your favourite roads involves a lengthy motorway run, or when a short ride regularly turns into a full day out.
• Protectors: are intended to limit damage to exposed areas in a fall. They are worth considering for an S 1000 R used around town, with frequent parking and low-speed manoeuvres, as well as one reserved for sporty weekend rides.
• Levers: let you personalise your contact with the brake and clutch controls. Both get plenty of use in stop-start traffic and on twisting roads, making hand comfort relevant to an S 1000 R that does both jobs.
• Footpegs: provide support for your feet as you shift your position through bends. For riders who enjoy the S 1000 R's sporting side, they are a useful area to focus on when considering how you sit and move on the bike.
• Tail tidies: give the rear a less cluttered appearance, complementing the naked bike's sporty style. They suit a visually focused build where the aim is to refine the look rather than add touring equipment.
