Urban

Urban locks are, above all, alarmed disc locks and chain and U-lock sets, the part of the range riders search for most, plus mini U-locks, cable locks, brackets for carrying the lock on the bike and Practic MP handlebar locks for scooters. Urban, which many riders know as Urban Security, gives each lock a rating on its own security scale and puts much of the range through independent certification: with those figures, two models can be compared in a moment.

How to compare two Urban locks

• Thickness: the pin or shackle runs from 6 mm on the most compact disc locks to 14 mm on the 999 and UR14S, and reaches 18 mm on the UR75 mini U-lock.
• Double locking: on the UR10, 999, UR75 or U9DY the pin is held at both ends, which makes a leverage attack very hard.
• Approvals: many carry the SRA rating and some, such as the UR14S or UR910S, Sold Secure as well. The Urban scale rating is shown on the product page.
• Lock cylinder: the SEK Plus Disctech on the higher models is designed to resist drilling and picking.

Disc locks, with and without alarm

Urban's alarm works in two stages: if someone touches the bike, the lock gives six warning beeps, and if they carry on, the 120 dB siren goes off. On most models you arm it with a double press, and the lock can be used with the alarm off. The UR906X closes with one hand and no key, and the UR6 adds a flashing light to the pre-alarm. Without an alarm there are the UR206 and UR208, with 6 and 10 mm pins in grey or yellow, and the 560A, with a 7 or 10 mm pin.

UR6 or UR10?

It is the comparison riders look up most. The UR6 has a 6 mm pin, fits almost any brake disc, bicycles included, and is the easiest to carry. The UR10 steps up to a 10 mm double-locking pin and SRA approval: more resistance in exchange for a slightly bigger lock and checking that the pin goes through the holes in your disc.

Chains and chain and lock sets

To tie the bike to a lamp post or an anchor, Urban sells the chain on its own, in 10, 11 or 14 mm (KDNA10L, KDNA11L and KDNA14L), or as a set with its lock: the UR74 at 13.5 mm, the U75 at 14.5 mm and lighter 8 or 10 mm sets such as the UR890, REC, U4K, UR85120 or UR59Duo. The thickest chains are heavy and tend to stay where you park; the 8 and 10 mm ones fit in a top box for everyday use. The REC and A-CD padlocks, with an 8 mm shackle, close the ends of a chain you already own.

Cables, brackets and Practic MP

Cable locks, from 60 to 200 cm, are for your helmet, your jacket or a second tie, never the only lock on the bike; the UR446 opens with a four-digit combination. To carry the lock on the bike there are the K999 bracket for footrests and square tubes, the K999.2 with a rotating clamp for round tubes, and the K999.3, which fixes to the footpeg bolts. For the daily scooter, each Practic MP shares its number with the Artago Practic for the same model: the 1687MP and 1687ALM, for instance, both fit the Beverly 300 and 400. If you are unsure which type of lock you need, our motorcycle anti-theft guide explains it by situation, and the other manufacturers on the site are under brands.
