Turn signal relays and resistances

Indicator load resistors and relays fix the most common problem after fitting LED indicators: hyper-flashing, or a warning light on the dash reporting a blown bulb. It happens because an LED draws far less current than a bulb, and the original relay reads that as a fault.

Relay or resistor: two fixes

• Electronic LED relay: it replaces the stock unit and keeps the flash rate right whatever the load. It is the neatest fix; what matters is that the number of outputs or pins matches the original. Puig offers 2, 3 and 7-output relays, and Highsider has relays and control units.
• Load resistors: wired in parallel with each LED indicator so the circuit sees the load of a bulb. Highsider makes them at 25 W in several values (3.9, 6.8 and 8.2 ohms) and with leads, and Rizoma has adapter cables with the resistor built in for many models.

Worth knowing

Resistors get hot in use: mount them on metal, away from plastics and wiring. On recent bikes whose ECU monitors the bulbs, you may need a resistor even after changing the relay; if you are not sure what yours needs, ask us on the chat before ordering.

The indicators themselves are under motorcycle turn signals, including Puig turn signals and those from Rizoma.
